Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Explained

         EFT Emotional Freedom Technique ...
              ... effectively accelerating personal change

Energy psychology techniques such as EFT have been demonstrated recently on television ... it's as simple as tapping on the body on acupuncture points to produce psychological change.Neuroscientists and psychotherapists believe that minor and major traumatic experiences are stored in motor (body) memory ... tapping and other techniques help these memories to be naturally processed allowing for effective personal change.

The key to the effectiveness of EFT and other Energy Psychology techniques is helping a person to connect with and resolve the core psychological issues underlying the problem. Hence practitioners often talk of the need to discover the various ‘aspects’ underlying the problem. These ‘aspects’ could include specific memories and associations, emotions, images, self defeating thought patterns, and childhood experiences.Other techniques that Sallyanne uses such as BSFF and Zensight are just as powerful and do not involve tapping.

Tapping - the Minds' Circuit Breaker

" Tapping acts like a circuit breaker. It takes big scary things/emotions and breaks them down into manageable bits." Bill
EFT evolved from TFT and the discovery by a Psychologist, Roger Callahan, that stimulating acupuncture points on a person’s body led to rapid psychological relief for a client with a phobia of water. A few seconds of tapping under the client’s eye led to a permanent cure from the phobia. EFT differs from TFT in that it's developer, Gary Craig, a personal performance coach, simplified the process and devised one sequence of locations for tapping on all issues.

EFT can have miraculous results however for chronic problems that have persisted over a long period of time or that have multiple aspects such as depression, there may be a need for more persistent tapping and in some cases ongoing psychotherapy and medication. These techniques must not be used in the place of other medical interventions unless advised by a treating health professional.

What do you experience when you use EFT?
The client above made an original observation, that the EFT process act like a circuit breaker cross circuiting a person's negative thinking. However the experience is usually subtle. Mostly people report feeling lighter after using the technique, sometimes people feel tired, particularly if they have been feeling very anxious or tense before tapping. Occasionally a person may cry or start to feel more anxious. Whilst the technique is simple and natural, it allows feelings to arise, hence care needs to be taken if a person is not familiar with experiencing emotion, or touches on memories of trauma or abuse.

Is EFT supported by scientific evidence?
There is an abundance of anecdotal evidence and a number of large uncontrolled outcome studies supporting the powerfulness of energy psychology techniques. At this stage there are few well designed clinical trials. David Feinstein (PhD) suggests that techniques such as EFT work by stimulating electrical fields, where the pairing of the mentally activated thought and intervention (such as EFT) sends electrical signals to the brain that interrupt a negative response pattern. If you are interested in reading more about relevant research you may want to check out a review of evidence by David Feinstein on his website

                    A Wonderful Self Help Tool
Energy psychology techniques can be easily incorporated into counselling and coaching, however its wonderful attribute is that it can be used by anyone as a self help tool. Simple focusing techniques such as tapping, breathing, or using cue words can more quickly get to the core of emotional issues. These techniques can be used to alleviate the symptoms associated with problems such as depression and anxiety, and can be remarkably effective in treating phobias quickly and painlessly.
